A free look at Lincolnshire’s heritage

Discover some of Lincolnshire’s best-loved attractions this weekend, as they open their doors for free for Heritage Open Days. This year’s theme is Lincolnshire at War – through the ages.

The weekend of Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September 2010 will feature themed events taking place across the county, at most of Lincolnshire’s top heritage sites including Gainsborough Old Hall, Lincoln Castle and Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

Lincoln Castle will be having special guided tours, and the prison groups will be doing historical re-enactments throughout the day. As usual, visitors will be able to do the wall walks, visit the old prison and marvel at the Magna Carta. Lincoln Castle has its own stories of war throughout the ages, going right back to the Battle of Hastings.

Gainsborough Old Hall will be looking at two periods of war in Lincolnshire. Lord Burgh’s Retinue will be in residence in the Great Hall talking about the War of the Roses and holding archery demonstrations. In the lower chamber there will be a World War Two re-enactment by Allied Forces Movement Control, including a display from the Royal Navy of the X-Craft, which was made in Gainsborough by Marshalls.

A visit to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life over the Heritage Open Days will give people an insight into World War One in Lincolnshire. A large selection of World War One memorabilia will be on display. Also on view will be some trench art, souvenirs and artwork from the trenches of World War One such as candlesticks made out of grenades and coal scuttles made from shell casings. This will be complimented by living history events with printers in the printing house and cooks in the kitchen.
