The Usher Gallery will reopen its doors on Saturday 2 October, but it won’t be the doors that everyone remembers!
The gallery now has a new pavilion entrance, making access easier for everyone. The new entrance will face on to Danes Terrace, towards The Collection Museum. The original entrance from Lindum Road will remain as a feature of the gallery, but will be closed.
The improved gallery will also feature a new lift to make access even easier for visitors. The pavilion entrance will now be complemented by an outside exhibition space, where sculptures and larger artworks can be displayed.
The Usher Gallery has been closed since October 2009 whilst improvements were carried out. This involved a painstaking process of taking artworks off the walls, carefully covering them and putting them into storage, and getting them back in the gallery again after works were finished.
The Usher Gallery will also play host to the prestigious National Portrait Gallery winners tour from 2 October until 14 November. It is one of only three UK venues to show the exhibition.
