This year teams of volunteers will hit the streets and waterways to clean up litter and rubbish between Monday, April 12, and Friday, April 16 – the second week of the Easter school holiday, so Jen is hoping teams of children will join in.
The event began in 2008, led by Boston Borough Council and the Environment Agency. It came about because of repeated complaints regarding litter in and around the centre of Boston and along the Maud Foster and South Forty Foot drains.
The aim was to get 100 volunteers out on the streets each day, and in 2008 this target was met with some days seeing more than 100 volunteers. More than ten tonnes of litter and fly tipping was collected. Volunteers who again took part in 2009 commented on how there was a marked reduction in the amount of litter since 2008.
Each day will begin at the Assembly Rooms and the borough will again be divided into five areas, with one area being tackled each day. Volunteers will be provided with litter-picking and safety equipment.
Churches Together group will provide a free lunch for all the volunteers in the Assembly Rooms, creating a team atmosphere bringing members of the community together.
Organiser, Jen Moore, the borough council’s environment and sustainability officer, said: “Those who have taken part before always say what a fun event it is. I know it doesn’t sound very likely, but they really enjoy getting out in the fresh air feeling that they are doing something really useful and worthwhile and the team spirit is amazing.”
The volunteer litter-pickers come from all parts of the community. Friends, relatives and neighbours can be organised to work together, and, where possible, to clean up the areas where they live. Some firms and organisations give their staff time off to help out. Mayflower Housing Association’s contractors are to join the teams of volunteers this year.
Teams of ten are sent off to allocated areas with a leader from the borough council’s operations department to guide and advise. If you want to name a grot spot or volunteer, contact Jen on 01205 314583 and she will provide you with a pledge form.
