Lincoln has plenty to attract the tourists, including a magnificent cathedral, a Norman castle, an original copy of the Magna Carta and one of Europe’s biggest Christmas markets.
Now it’s also getting the infrastructure to match thanks to an unprecedented boom in the city’s hotel sector.
Hilton Worldwide’s recent announcement that a four-star Doubletree by Hilton hotel is to open on Lincoln Marina in 2011 is just the latest in a series of new developments which is bringing big-name hotels to the city.
Hilton is following the lead of Holiday Inn Express, which opened a new hotel in Lincoln at the end of 2008, and Premier Inn, which is developing a hotel on Broadgate in the city centre.
Planning permission has already been granted for 50 more bedrooms at the Holiday Inn on Brayford Pool.
Independently owned hotels such as the White Hart, Charlotte House and the Castle are responding with development or expansion plans of their own, while the Lincolnshire Showground just north of Lincoln has plans for a hotel development on the site.
Tourism experts say that a shortage of high-quality hotels has prevented this beautiful and historic city from realising its potential as a top visitor destination – until now.
Doubletree by Hilton, which is due to open in the autumn of 2011, will provide 115 new beds and create 70 jobs.
Its design will incorporate a rooftop ballroom with views of Lincoln Cathedral that can accommodate up to 250 guests for dinner.
There are now around 670 hotel rooms in and around Lincoln and the new developments will create a further 476, almost doubling the number available to 1,146.
