The rest of the country can now look up to Boston so far as fitness is concerned.
In a remarkable turnaround Boston has gone from fat capital to fit capital. Latest figures show that Boston has had the biggest increase in the country in residents taking part in regular sport and active recreation.
The latest round of Active People results from Sport England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport show Boston has made a massive increase in regular adult participation from 14.6% in 2005/6 to 20.7% in 2007/8 and then up again to 21.9% in 2008/10, an increase of 7.4% - not bettered by anywhere else.
Four years ago the same results showed adult participation in sport and physical activity in Boston were the country's lowest. The results measure the number of adults aged over 16 who participate in 30 minutes of sport and active recreation three times per week or more.
The Lincolnshire Sports Partnership said: "The results for Lincolnshire and Boston have been amazing. When the Active People baseline was announced in 2005 Boston was ranked 237th out of the 237 districts across England, in 2010 they are 153rd , jumping over 80 places."
Much of the success of the Boston scheme is down to the enthusiastic leadership of Fran Taylor, the council’s Play and Physical Activity Officer, and her team of volunteer lead walkers, some of whom are disabled.
Figures from Sport England released earlier in the year showed Boston had the biggest increase in adult participation in sport in Lincolnshire between 2005/6 and June, 2010, and was well above the average for the East Midlands.
