Care and concerns by councillors have led to approval of £141,470 for repairs and maintenance to Boston Stump. The council is the “lay rector” of St Botolph’s Church – the largest parish church in England - and provides funds for repairs to the chancel.
The cash will pay for a five-year programme of works between 2010/11 and 2015/16.
The council last approved £150,000 for chancel repairs in 2005.
The latest schedule will allow for repairs to the masonry of bases of the two western bays of the south wall (£20,000), clean and undertake masonry repairs to the whole of the north elevation (£50,000), repairs to the north east pinnacle (£4,000), clean the east window, descale the ferramenta and check the condition of the glass (£8,000), conservation repair to the south doorway (£20,000) and relay sunken paving (which acts as a gutter for roof drainage) along the south wall (£10,000). VAT and architect’s fees make up the remainder.
