Cycle-theft reduction wheels in motion

The wheels are in motion to help reduce rising cycle thefts in Lincoln.

Between April 2009 and March 2010, Lincoln suffered the county’s biggest rise in stolen bicycles with 592 taken, compared with 461 the previous year.  However, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Police and Lincoln Business Improvement Group are unveiling a range of measures to mark Bike Week, designed to put the brakes on the crime.

Lincoln BIG, working with county council Highways, have announced that a new cycle-parking facility is to be installed opposite the rail station. The existing facility is being extended and refurbished to provide 15 smart stainless steel Sheffield cycle stands and new signage.  Funding, including £7,500 from the county council grant fund, has been secured, with a installation date to be confirmed soon.

Meanwhile, PCSOs will be on hand to offer free postcode stamping and security advice to bike owners in Lincoln’s City Square on Friday 25 June.  This is part of a Bike Week cycling information event, taking place between 10am and 2.30pm.

Vanessa Strange at the County Council’s travel team said:

“We want to encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the benefits of cycling.  Reducing the opportunities for theft is crucial to this.  We hope cyclists and potential cyclists can take advantage of the new and existing security facilities in the city, as well as the postcode-stamping and advice available.”

Cycle lockers are also available at four locations around the city near the Waterside and High Street, along with four in Lucy Tower Car park.   Other cycle parking facilities, such as Sheffield Stands, are also available.

Mick Lake at Lincoln Big added:

“Cycling is a healthy and cost-effective means of traveling to work, which is usually quicker than using a car in the busy city centre.  Renting a cycle locker makes good sense too; your bike is completely secure and there is space to store your helmet and wet-weather gear.”
