Discover Lincolnshire for free

Come along and discover some of the county’s finest heritage for free later this month at the Discover Lincolnshire Weekend.

This year’s Discover Lincolnshire Weekend takes place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March 2010, and will give people a chance to explore Lincolnshire’s most popular attractions, enjoying special guided tours and other activities. As part of the weekend, people will have the opportunity to visit Lincoln Castle and Gainsborough Old Hall without paying the usual entry fees.

Built by William the Conqueror, Lincoln Castle is one of the county’s most popular attractions, and home to one of only four remaining original copies of Magna Carta. The castle will be open from 10am – 4pm, with free guided tours throughout the day. Find out what life was like as a prisoner during Victorian times, and be amazed by the skill and accuracy of the archers during the longbow demonstrations.

Another of the county’s heritage treasures, Gainsborough Old Hall will also be offering free entry and costumed guided tours across the weekend. Open between 11am and 5pm, this magnificent manor house has connections with some of the most famous names in history, such as Richard III, Henry VIII and The Mayflower Pilgrims. With its original kitchens, great hall and tower, Gainsborough Old Hall offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval life.

The Museum of Lincolnshire Life will be having a Victorian living history event throughout the weekend, where he Victorian Kitchen will be open and the Victorian printing press will be in action.  The museum is free to enter all-year-round, and is open from 10am until 4pm with last entry at 3.30pm.
