Discover medieval Lincoln

A new map showing medieval Lincoln is now online.

The medieval map, created by the council's Heritage Team, gives historic information about 52 buildings and 80 streets.

From the well known Stonebow on High Street and Exchequergate near the cathedral, through to lesser known buildings, like the Witch and Wardrobe Pub and the shops on High Bridge, the map details sites across Lincoln that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

John Herridge, Heritage Officer at the City of Lincoln Council, said:

"Anyone living, working or visiting Lincoln will pass medieval sites, possibly without even knowing it.  Well known streets such as Mint Street were around in medieval times.  For instance, we know Hungate dates back to the 14th century, with the name meaning ‘street of the hounds’.

We hope to add pictures to the descriptions on the map, but for the time being, people can explore the map to pinpoint medieval sites, and then go out and see them for themselves in the city."
