District Council agrees funding to support Horncastle and Louth flood prevention

Flood prevention schemes proposed by the Environment Agency for the market towns of Horncastle and Louth have moved a step closer today after East Lindsey District Council approved £1m of funding support.

Areas of Horncastle and Louth were both devastated by flooding in 2007 and many people were forced out of their homes and into temporary accommodation. The £1m agreed by East Lindsey District Council will be split equally between the two schemes.

Work on the scheme for Louth, which could result in a large reservoir upstream of the town, could start in 2013. At Horncastle, a phased approach to construct flood storage areas is also being developed.

The Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, met many of the families affected by the flooding of 2007:  "I witnessed first hand the devastation many people in our communities faced as a result of the floods – not only the immediate affects but the months of stress for those who had to move into temporary accommodation or stay with friends and family while their homes were made liveable.

"I am pleased the District Council has agreed the money, which is likely to mean both towns are much better protected in the future."
