Take a trip underground and get a glimpse into Lincoln’s hidden past as Posterngate opens up for visitors.
The old Roman gateway that lies beneath the Royal Bank of Scotland in Bank Street, Lincoln is one of the city’s hidden treasures and gives visitors a unique look at Lincoln’s history. It was discovered during excavations in the 1970’s and has remained popular with visitors ever since. To help preserve this part of Lincoln, Posterngate is only opened a few times each year, so don’t miss this fantastic opportunity.
The main attraction is a Roman limestone wall which used to form part of the main Southern Wall of the old city. There are also information boards for people to find out more about Lincoln during Roman times, and talks from a knowledgeable tour guide.
The Posterngate itself was a gateway that allowed people to access boats on Lincoln’s waterfront. It is widely thought that the route was used by merchants and traders when Lincoln’s waterside was a bustling port.
Posterngate will be open to the public on Saturday 21 August from 10am until 4pm. Tours start on the hour at 10am, last for 15 minutes and include a historical talk and a chance to take photographs. The cost is just 50p per person. If you would like to see Posterngate, just come along to Bank Street on the day.
