Hundreds of young people will Get Safe for Summer in Skegness

A special Get Safe for Summer event will take place in Skegness next month the Amateur Swimming Association has announced and East Lindsey District Council will be the hosts.

Former Great Britain Swimmer, Melanie Marshall will be the guest of honour at the event on July 7 when hundreds of young people from primary schools across the District take part in the events and activities to better understand the importance of water safety.

"Living by the sea it is important we educate our young people and families about how to be safe around water and I’m immensely proud that East Lindsey District Council has been selected to host an event again this year," said Portfolio Holder for Leisure at the District Council, Councillor Adam Grist.

The Get Safe for Summer Initiative, which is also supported by the Royal Life Saving Society, focuses on promoting and raising awareness of the importance of learning to swim and being confident around water. It does this by helping to increase knowledge and practical skills around water safety.

Activities at the event will include first aid courses, rookie lifeguard training and demonstrations from key emergency services.

The hub of activities will be the Embassy Theatre and Swimming Pool complex but with demonstrations and activities also taking place on Central Beach and Tower Esplanade.

At the Get Safe for Summer event, key lifesaving agencies including the RNLI and Fire Service will attend to give demonstrations focusing on safety.

Councillor Grist, continued: "There is a very serious message behind the Get Safe for Summer events – we all need to take water safety very seriously. By exploring this message through fun activities and games I’m sure lots of people will have a great time and take this message home to spread far and wide amongst their friends and families. I hope everyone has a safe summer."

In 2009, Skegness hosted the national Get Safe for Summer launch event attended by 1,000 young people.

Get Safe for Summer was launched by the Amateur Swimming Association in 2008.
