Joint effort rescues stranded students

A group of Lincoln College students overcame the arctic conditions to make it home safely - with a little help from the county council and local volunteers.

The students had been travelling home to Skegness on their regular Stagecoach service. However, the bus had to end its journey in Horncastle as the wintery conditions worsened. Finding themselves stranded, the group contacted the county council’s transport services.

Jinny Niven, transport manager at the county council, said:

“The first thing we did was arrange for the students to wait in the nearby Admiral Rodney Hotel, who kindly agreed to help so they could be safe and warm. We then contacted our emergency planning team for their help. They organised for volunteers from the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire 4x4 group to come out and take the students home. My thanks go to all those who helped see these students home safely.”

The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire 4x4 group are volunteers who work with the emergency services, including in this kind of extreme weather.

Louise Robinson, senior emergency planning officer, said:

“This was a great joint response, and we’re grateful for the community support we had in making sure these students were safe and warm in these unprecedented conditions. Public transport will inevitably be disrupted during this weather, and simple preparations such as having your mobile phone charged up and warm clothes can make a big difference.”

As wintry conditions continue, people are urged to ensure they are properly equipped for their journey, by public transport or by car, and in the most extreme weather, defer their journeys, if possible.
