Confidence in the Lincoln Christmas Market remains high, despite last year’s cancellation, with around 50 per cent of stallholders already committed to return to the event this year.
After severe weather forced the City of Lincoln Council to cancel the 2010 market, stallholders were offered a full refund of their fees, or the chance to take up a stall at the 2011 event for no extra fee.
With eight months to go until the Lincoln Christmas Market 2011, 131 businesses, out of the 264 that had planned to attend the 2010 event have taken the opportunity to return at last year’s prices. In addition, the Christmas Market team has already received 100 expressions of interest from businesses wishing to attend the event.
Usually, applications are only open for the Christmas Market from May. In 2010, it wasn’t until 21st May that 131 applications had been received by the council.
Fees for the 2011 Christmas Market were agreed at a meeting of the council’s Executive on Monday 28th March, subject to approval by Full Council on Tuesday 19th April. If approved, stallholder fees will increase in line with the Retail Price Index at 4.2 per cent – an average increase per stall of £40. This will be the smallest percentage increase for the last three years. In 2009, the stallholder fee was increased by seven per cent and in 2010 the fees were increased by five per cent.
