Traders have welcomed the halfway point in a £100,000-plus project that is helping to improve part of the city centre.
The “Gateway Project”, which has received financial support from the City of Lincoln Council and the European Regional Development Fund, is part of Lincoln BIG’s drive to pave the way for the Lindongate scheme.
The aim of the Gateway initiative is to maintain interest in, and the appearance of the Sincil Street and Cornhill areas of Lincoln, until major investment in the proposed Lindongate scheme is forthcoming.
The project has already brought about physical changes, including a colourful Summer floral display, the upgrading of toilets and also shop improvement grants. A range of activities and events in the area have included fun days, music and Lincoln’s highly successful summer beach.
Everything, apart from the staff time involved, has been paid for by external funding.
Lincoln BIG chief executive Matt Corrigan said: "Lindongate will be a fantastic investment in the city centre. It has every prospect of going ahead as market conditions improve, but in the interim it is important to maintain the look and feel of the area for existing businesses.
The prospect of major future changes can make people reluctant to make short term investments. This factor has meant that the level of shop vacancies in this area is higher than in other parts of the city centre and it is more difficult to attract trade here."
Now further spending is on the cards. The next part of the Gateway Project will include repaving, signage and new landscaping, as well as the return of the Christmas Ice Rink to City Square.
