Lincoln Grand Prix

The Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday 8th May will have a touch of London 2012 Olympic Games about it as officers from the London Olympics Response Command visit the race as observers.

This is in order for them to learn police and other procedures involved in the organisation of a major road cycling event. The race organisation and Lincolnshire Police will assist them with their study of the various aspects of road closures, marshals, stewards, communications and command and control centres. The information gained will be used in their planning for the Olympic Games road races and time trials.

All of the main UK road teams are now entered for the Premier Calendar race but final rider selections will not take place until after Monday 11th April, which is the closing date. It is expected that 160 riders will start the 86 mile event which takes place over 11 laps of an eight mile circuit based on the historic centre of Lincoln with an excursion out and back through the village of Burton.

The Velo Club Lincoln's 56th promotion of the race starts from the Yarborough Leisure Centre at 10am and is expected to finish in Lincoln's Castle Square at around 1.30pm. Full information is on the website.

Race day will also have circuit races for local school clubs and riders with a short circuit based on the castle and cathedral areas of Lincoln. These will be short events taking place in between early laps of the Grand Prix and give the youngsters a valuable experience of racing at a major event.

The Grand Prix is now the culmination of The Lincoln Festival of Cycling Weekend with the Lincoln Grand Prix Sportive taking place on the Saturday.

This event is for club and leisure cyclists and offers two routes, a 94 mile excursion out to the Lincolnshire Wolds and back and a shorter 55 mile version for those not so brave. Entries are going well for these with 182 entered for the long route and 116 for the shorter version. Entries are still open and welcome at the headquarters and start is at The Bishops Grosseteste College and the finish in Castle Square, with the cobbled climb of Michaelgate thrown in at the end for good measure.
