Lincoln highlighted as tourism jewel

Lincoln is celebrating two unique successes that underline the city’s reputation as a tourist destination.

In the same week that Lincoln was nominated as one of the top five tourism destinations in the country at a national tourism awards ceremony the city has been singled out by the world famous Lonely Planet guide as “an under-visited delight.”

On Tuesday evening (May 19th) Lincoln came in the top five in the ‘Town / City of the Year’ category at the prestigious Coach Tourism Awards.  Southport was the outright winner with London, Rochester and Cardiff making up the top five.

Visitors and coach drivers vote for the awards, now in their fourth year.  Lincoln was highlighted as a city ‘with great service and a great product; in particular it was praised for the friendliness of its people.

Lonely Planet’s latest guide to Great Britain was similar in its praise for Lincoln.  The guide listed Lincoln as a ‘must see’ city and placed it alongside the likes of Birmingham and Nottingham as ‘going up’ on their barometer.  The guide says about Lincoln “At the hill’s base, the university breathes life into a waterfront quarter where bars are positioned to watch boats come and go.”

Rob Bradley, Economic Sustainability and Tourism Services Manager for the City of Lincoln Council said:

"Both of these achievements highlight how over the last ten years Lincoln is becoming increasingly recognised as a great place to visit.

We have worked hard to improve the city’s offering through the regeneration of the Brayford Waterfront and the Cultural Quarter and by developing strong partnerships with local businesses and Lincolnshire Tourism.

What is most pleasing is that the welcome given by Lincoln people has not gone unnoticed, and for that every one who lives and work in the city should be proud."
