Lincolnshire excels in GCSE and A-level performance

National league tables published today show Lincolnshire’s schools continue to provide an excellent education for our young people, with results for both GCSE and A-levels above the national average.

The 5A*-C GCSE results including English and maths show a pass rate of over 56%, up 3.5% on last year and 6.3% above the national average.  Two schools achieved an outstanding 100% pass rate against this measure - Caistor Grammar School and Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Horncastle.

In addition, six schools are in the top 5% of schools nationally in terms of the progress made by pupils from key stage 2 (year 6) to key stage 4 (year 11).  These are:

  • The Priory Witham Academy, Lincoln
  • Tennyson High School, Mablethorpe
  • The Charles Read High School, CorbyGlen
  • The Giles School, Old Leake
  • The Priory City of Lincoln Academy
  • De Aston School, Market Rasen

At post-16, Lincolnshire students continue to achieve more points per candidate than in many other areas making them eminently well qualified to continue to the best universities. The table of local authorities ranked by average A-level points score per candidate sees Lincolnshire in 18th place overall from nearly 150 authorities.

Expectations of our young people are exceptionally high given their phenomenal achievements at GCSE.  Many have to achieve the highest possible grades to show value-added.  The Giles School in Old Leake has shown what can be done and its students are in the top 25% for value-added from key stage 4.

Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, Executive Councillor for Children’s Services, is delighted with Lincolnshire’s performance: “These results from our secondary schools are outstanding. We are outperforming the vast majority of other local authorities and it clearly shows Lincolnshire is an excellent place for parents to have their children educated. We send our congratulations to the students, teachers, parents and carers.”

Peter Duxbury, Director of Children’s Services, added: “We have extremely high aspirations for young people in Lincolnshire and I am proud of the way in which pupils, schools, parents, carers and other services have worked together to achieve these excellent results.”
