Lincolnshire firefighters are on their way to Haiti, after a massive earthquake hit the Caribbean state late last night.
Officers from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue will join emergency services from around the globe as part of the worldwide response to the quake, which has devastated buildings in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The Lincolnshire service received the emergency call in the early hours of this morning, and officers are currently making their way to West Sussex to liaise with firefighters from around the UK. From there, the team will then travel to Haiti early this afternoon, with Lincolnshire’s Chief Fire Officer, Mike Thomas, as team leader for the whole of the UK response.
Mike Thomas, Chief Fire Officer, said:
“Five members of our Urban Search and Rescue team are on their way to Haiti, along with our rescue dog, Holly. They are accompanied by five other Lincolnshire officers, including myself. Once in Haiti, the team will work alongside aid agencies from around the world, helping with the efforts to find and free survivors trapped under the rubble.”
The Lincolnshire officers will be joining firefighters from Kent, Lancashire, Manchester, Mid and West Wales, the West Midlands and West Sussex. At this stage, it is not known how long the team will be required in Haiti.
