Marks and Spencer stores in three Lincolnshire towns will close, the company has confirmed. Branches in Grantham, Skegness and Scunthorpe will close early next year.
The news comes despite extensive efforts to prevent the closure, with the Skegness store collecting over 20,000 signatures on a petition.
Marks and Spencer said it had seen years of falling sales which meant the three stores were no longer commercially viable. About 110 posts will be affected when the stores close.
Councillor Doreen Stephenson, leader of East Lindsey District Council, said she was very disappointed to hear the news about the Skegness branch:
"It's a very sad day. Obviously the council has made every effort it could within its responsibility and I have every sympathy with both the staff, residents and also our visitors who look forward to shopping in Marks and Spencer."
South Kesteven Council also expressed disappointment at M&S's decision to close stores:
"Marks and Spencer have had a clear business strategy for some time to invest in their much larger retail sites. While this is disappointing, we must not forget our local, niche shops."
Despite efforts of local councils, businesses and people M&S confirmed that it had listened to the views of local residents but that none of the proposed alternatives it received would have made the stores commercially viable.
