Magical opening for festive market

With just under 24 hours to go until Lincoln’s famed Christmas Market starts, preparations for the traditional opening are in full flow.

The Mayor of Lincoln and the Dean of Lincoln Cathedral will be joined by representatives from Lincoln's German twin town of Neustadt, choirs and opera singers as they assemble on the steps of the cathedral following evensong.

In a truly magical and festive atmosphere, the Mayor of Lincoln will officially open the Lincoln Christmas Market, which first began in 1982 with just 14 stalls in Castle Square.

The ceremony will end as the tune of Silent Night fills the air, with opera singers performing the traditional Christmas hymn.

Councillor Darren Grice, Leader of the City of Lincoln Council, which organises the Christmas Market, said:

"Last year, the traditional opening at the West front of the cathedral was really special and helped to create that lovely festive atmosphere at the Christmas Market. With a backdrop of the magnificent cathedral and castle, the Lincoln Christmas Market has an unrivalled setting. I'd like to encourage all Lincoln people - especially anyone who hasn't been for a few years - to come along to the market, see the positive changes we've made, and really kick start the festive season."

There will things to see and do all across the market this year, with an emphasis on childrens entertainment.

For the first time, Father Christmas will be paying a visit to the market. He will be hearing children's Christmas wishes by fireside at Judge's Lodgings on Castle Square. While waiting, children can make fairy wings and magic wands with the Fairy Godmother and the Wonderful Wizard.

Over at the Lawn, the Winter Wonderland has fairground rides especially for the under 12s, including the Santa Swings and the Reindeer Ride. And the big wheel, dodgems and Victorian gallopers on Westgate will be there for any adults wanting the thrills of the fair.

The opening ceremony is due to start at 6.30pm, with entertainment from 6pm.
