Make a flying start to the royal wedding weekend

The additional holiday weekend provides a perfect opportunity to explore the county’s rich aviation history.

The royal wedding bank holiday weekend will coincide with the first weekend opening for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre this year. The flight operates a Lancaster, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, two Chipmunks, and a Dakota, with a partnership between Lincolnshire County Council and the Royal Air Force making it possible to view these historic aircraft at their base at RAF Coningsby.

Kelly Jestin, site co-ordinator, said:

“The long weekend is an ideal opportunity to explore this important part of our country’s history. The visitor centre has welcomed over 300,000 people to its permanent gallery, temporary exhibitions space and excellent shop over the years. Those who take a guided tour have the rare opportunity to visit the flight on its home territory, where you can watch technicians who have learnt skills all but lost, working on these magnificent aircraft.

“But these aircraft are no museum pieces - they’re all still flying and can be seen at a variety of air shows in the summer months. Three of the planes are even scheduled to take part in royal wedding celebrations down in London as Prince William is Patron of the Flight.”

The centre is open on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May, but is closed on Bank Holiday Monday. Admission is free. The attraction is open from 10am to 5pm, with the last hangar tour departing at 3.30pm. The hangar tours cost: £6 for adults; £4 for concessions; £16 for a family ticket (two adults and three concessions); and are free for those under 5 years of age.
