The name for Horncastle’s new community park off Hemingby Lane has been chosen by the local community.
Bain Valley Park, which received 70% of the 170 votes cast, will officially open to the community in spring 2010, when the transformation from a disused piece of wasteland to a thriving community park will be completed.
For the last nine months, East Lindsey District Council has been carrying out the project’s construction phase, which includes landscaped gardens, amenity area and disabled car parking, with £850,000 of funding from East Midlands Development Agency (emda). The money was awarded to the Council through emda’s Brownfield Land Action Plan (BLAP) Programme which helps transform contaminated waste land in to attractive space for communities.
Mayor of Horncastle, Councillor Sandra Campbell-Wardman thanked those who voted: “This is an exciting project for Horncastle and will give the town another valuable open space that I’m sure many families will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”
Chris Blankley, Head of Operations at emda, said: "Once this park is completed the people of Horncastle will benefit greatly from valuable leisure space. The naming of the park is a great milestone for the project and involving local residents gives a wonderful sense of unity. With 70% of the votes, Bain Valley Park was clearly a favourite by residents. I look forward to the opening next spring.”
Portfolio Holder for Amenities at the District Council, Councillor Brian Burnett, who is responsible for parks and open spaces, said: “Bain Valley Park will be a place where families can spend quality time together away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. This project is an exciting one and one that I hope the people of Horncastle will be proud of for many years to come. I look forward to meeting lots of the community at the opening next spring.”
A community day will be held at the Bain Valley Park to celebrate its opening in spring 2010. More details will be available nearer the time.
The community were invited to vote on three names following a short listing by the Mayor of Horncastle, from the names initially put forward following public consultation. Votes were cast online, in Horncastle’s Customer Access Point and by calling the District Council’s Customer Service Centre.
