National Crime Stats Reveal Good News For Lincolnshire

Residents of Lincolnshire can today feel reassured that their County continues to be a safe place to live, work and visit after national crime statistics show reductions in the areas of crime that matter most to local communities.

The statistics, released by the Home Office today, reveal not only that Lincolnshire continues to be one of the safest Counties in the country, but also that crime rates are reducing, and at a greater rate than the national average in many crime types.

Assistant Chief Constable, Roger Bannister, accredits the success in part to the ongoing project Operation Fusion which targets the serious acquisitive crimes of burglary, robbery and vehicle crime. "This is an example of an operation that has gone from strength to strength.  We have built on the successes achieved since the launch of the project in 2009 and continued to significantly reduce the number of victims whose lives are affected by such crime.  This good news comes not only as a result of the mammoth efforts of all our staff, but is also due to the invaluable support we receive from our partners, such as the County Council, and the local people we serve.  We can target offenders and bring them to justice, but by working with local partners and communities, we maximise our effectiveness."

Mr Bannister recognised the current financial situation and emphasised the importance of the relationship between the Police, partners and the public, in the challenging times ahead.  "Our duty is to protect and serve using the resources we have in the most efficient way.  The continued support of local people and our partners is essential.  We have reaped the benefits of this support and today’s figures are testament to that.  With a reducing budget, we need to constantly assess what we do and seek ways of providing more for less."

The documents released today also cover the results of the British Crime Survey (BCS). This is carried out nationally by the Home Office and involves the random selection of 1000 Lincolnshire households to answer questions about the perception of crime and combined police and local authority performance. Public confidence in the Police and local authority has again risen for Lincolnshire.  This is an area that has improved for each reporting period since it was introduced as a measure. The public perceived levels of anti-social behaviour (ASB) have been recorded as the third lowest in the country of the 43 Forces. This provides evidence of the effectiveness of the increased amount of Police and Partnership activity to combat ASB.

Although the results show an improvement in the perceptions of those surveyed, Mr Bannister said that the aspirations of the Force went beyond this achievement.  "Not only have we seen a reduction in crime, we have also seen an improvement in how local communities view the job we do.  These are excellent results and we should recognise this.  However, we always aim higher.  When our staff do a good job it is important that this is reflected in local opinion.  We need to publicise successes and build on the already improving perceptions within our local communities."

"The reductions in recorded crime and incident levels, along with the improved public confidence levels, are good news for the County.  It all adds up to some results that Lincolnshire can be proud of.  We continue to strive for further improvement and reassure those we serve that we aim to make the County even safer." Mr Bannister concluded.
