Assistant Chief Constable of Lincolnshire, Keith Smy has extended an invitation to members of the public and the media who are interested in discussing the policing plans for three major events in and around Lincoln on the same day - Sunday May 9th.
Mr Smy says his main aim is to minimise inconvenience to the public and ensure their
safety. “My priority is to ensure that those who don’t want to attend any of the events aren’t inconvenienced and those who do want to attend any of the events are provided with hassle-free access to the event of their choice. We also want to minimise disruption to those who live in the areas where movement will be restricted on the day,” he said.
The 55th Lincoln Cycle Grand Prix will attract thousands of visitors to the city to watch cyclists from all over the world cover 11 laps of an 8-mile circuit. There will be a host of side attractions with the main event beginning at 10am and due to finish by about 1pm. The main event involves closures of many roads around Lincoln city centre particularly the uphill area and also on at least eleven occasions, the main A57 route in and out of the city.
Also happening at 10am that day is the start of the final day of the 50th National Police Dog Trials at Police Headquarters just off the A46, three miles north of Lincoln towards Grimsby. That is being combined with the bi-annual Lincolnshire Police Open Day and the fun and competition starts there also at 10am and will run through until about 5pm. If the popularity of previous events can be considered a guide to this year, more than 5,000 people can be expected at police headquarters during the day.
“The main objective will be for everyone, regardless of which event they are considering going to, to have a great and safe time and travel to and from home easily and safely and also to minimise disruption to local residents,” said Mr Smy.
“To achieve that and let local people know our plans I want to invite interested members of the public and any members of the media to come along to our planning meeting next Monday morning at 1000 at Police Headquarters. We will be outlining the recent history of the Open Day and what people can expect, the longer history of the dog trials and what the final day holds and our roads policing officers will be providing an overview of the planned traffic control arrangements in and around Lincoln on Sunday May 9th,” he said.
Mr Smy conceded that motorists on the A57 would be inconvenienced when the road was closed for frequent periods during the cycle race. “The best thing if you’re not interested in seeing the action is to avoid that part of Lincoln. If you do want to get to any of the events the simple advice is to travel early; leave loads of time; don’t vent your frustrations if you are held up and if you are patient you will arrive safely,” he said.
“It’s still two months to the event but we want to be transparent with our planning so that local residents can come and see the way we plan the policing of these events and why,” he said.
Anyone wishing to attend the briefing should contact Carol Gamwell at police headquarters on 01522 558006 or via e-mail: [email protected] so that a security pass can be prepared and arrive on Monday 29th March by 1000. The briefing will begin at 1015 and end by noon.
