Proud to fly the Green Flag

Two of Lincoln’s best green spaces are celebrating after being awarded the prestigious Green Flag award – again!

After winning the award for the first time last year, Hartsholme Country Park was once again listed as one of the best parks in England and Wales, and the Arboretum was awarded the Green Flag for the sixth year running.

The Green Flag Award scheme is the national standard for parks and green spaces, which are judged against a high standard.  To win the award, they must be welcoming, safe and well maintained, with the strong involvement of the local community.  The award scheme began in 1996 and has grown in recognition since.

At Hartsholme Country Park, a regular team of 10 volunteers support City of Lincoln Council officers in keeping the area well maintained.  The group has plans to build a sensory garden this year, with a grant from the Breathing Spaces fund.  A family fun day on 9th August will kick start the project, with visitors helping to build the garden in a previously unused area of the park.

Dave Charysz, Open Space Officer for the City of Lincoln Council, said:

"Everyone worked very hard last year to get the Green Flag Award for the Park, but we couldn’t just rest on our laurels.  That hard work has continued and we have been rewarded with the Green Flag again this year, which we are delighted with.  We have here a fantastically interesting and beautiful green space for people from all over the area to enjoy, so we are really proud to have retained the Green Flag."

The Arboretum on Monks Road was the first green space in Lincolnshire to achieve Green Flag status in 2004.  The formal Victorian park was originally designed and laid down between 1870 and 1872, and underwent a £3 million revamp in 2003.

Dave continued:

"This is great news for all the people who work hard throughout the year to make these parks what they are, but it is especially good for the residents and visitors who use the parks.  They can be assured that they are in a clean and safe environment that has been recognised for being amongst the best in the country."
