Visitors to beaches in Lincolnshire will be able to call upon the expertise of Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards during the summer as they prepare to begin their vital daily safety patrols from next weekend (Saturday 28 May).
A total of seven lifeguards will patrol the beaches in Mablethorpe and Skegness for 14 weeks throughout the summer. Safety patrols, with three additional lifeguards at Sutton on Sea will begin on Saturday 25 June for 10 weeks.
Lifeguards based in Skegness will operate the charity’s rescue water craft (RWC) to aid water users. RNLI area lifeguard supervisor Mark Hargreaves said they’re hoping the recent good weather continues to ensure a busy summer on all the beaches.
He said: "All of the RNLI’s lifeguards have spent the last month refreshing their lifesaving skills and first aid abilities and are now looking forward to the service becoming operational on the beaches.
"We are hoping the sunshine brings both residents and tourists to the area to enjoy the beaches and would advise all visitors to seek out the lifeguards for information on local conditions and to swim between the red and yellow flags."
Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure and Tourism at East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Adam Grist, added: "We want people coming to our coast to have an amazing time and to be safe and RNLI lifeguards on the beach provide an important reassurance for those bathing in the sea."
The seven-day-a-week lifeguard service is partially funded by East Lindsey District Council, which pays the lifeguards’ wages. The RNLI provides all training costs and equipment, through charitable donations, which equates to £1,000 per lifeguard, per season.
