A number of the counties schools have closed due to the snow and ice hitting Lincolnshire.
Lincolnshire County Council have posted a number of school closures on their website, which is being updated throughout the day with new information as it becomes available.
With up to 10cm (3.9 inches) of snow predicted for some parts of the county over the next 24 hours, drivers are also being asked to take care when driving across the county - ensuring that they carry the basic essentials of a fully charged mobile phone, warm clothing, ice scraper and deicer as well as sack or other cloth to improve traction should they have problems with wheel spin.
Lincolnshire County Council’s highways team are out across the county doing all they can to ensure Lincolnshire’s roads and footpaths remain safe for residents. David Davies, principal maintenance engineer, said:
“Lincolnshire County Council has been gritting across the county, at different levels according to the conditions in particular areas. Snow ploughs have been employed whilst salting in the Wolds and the Fens and some secondary routes and footways have also been treated, in accordance with our gritting policy.
“In severe weather conditions, we always recommend drivers consider whether their journey is essential before setting off. If you do need to travel, make sure all your windows and mirrors are clear of frost before you start and drive carefully on treated and untreated roads alike, keeping a safe stopping distance behind other vehicles.
"Although we are aware of the difficulties caused by icy footpaths, all our resources are already deployed salting almost 2,000 miles of Lincolnshire’s vast highways network, which costs over £4m each winter maintenance season.
“Unfortunately, this means we simply cannot routinely salt the thousands of miles of the county’s footways as well. However, during a severe prolonged spell of ice or snow, such as we are experiencing at present, we treat footways in a priority order. This approach is adopted by all other authorities in the area. We have also placed, in certain circumstances, salt bins at known trouble spots and will continue returning to keep them topped up with grit. The practice is that parish, district or town councils or volunteers within towns will often take on the responsibility of carrying out this gritting, informing us when the bins need refilling.
“We always urge pedestrians to take extra care during the severe weather conditions whether or not the footways have been treated."
