Skegness beach monster enters the record books!

Skegness is in the Guinness Book of Records after volunteers came together in the resort to create the world’s biggest sand monster on St. George’s Day (April 23, 2010).

The sculpture, based on a Dragon, stretched over 277 feet, 3 inches and was created on North End Beach. The Skegness Dragon was over double the size of the sand lobster being created simultaneously in Maine, USA, where a team was also attempting to break the world record, which previously stood at 125 feet.

Around 1,000 spectators witnessed the day’s work done by 20 H.O.P.E. volunteers lead by sculpture designer Chris Fowler.  Chris, who entertained the public in his St. George’s costume, explained that with the weather being so good the golden sand from Skegness beach was very difficult to mould.

Michael Scallan, project co-ordinator, said: "It was a great experience; the whole community backed us and participated in helping us achieving this Guinness World Record."

Stefan Krause, Skegness Town Centre Manager employed by East Lindsey District Council, added: "This event brought local businesses, Skegness residents and holidaymakers together to kick off the great British seaside get away in spectacular style. Skegness is a record breaker!"
