Skegness has joined Nottingham’s bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup.
Nottingham is one of 16 cities across the country bidding to be part of England’s proposal to stage the biggest sporting event in the world.
On Monday, September 7, senior representatives from the FA visited Skegness as part of their detailed inspection of the bid put forward by Nottingham.
The Nottingham bid team is keen to expand the city’s World Cup bid to cover all that the wider region has to offer. Skegness is a hugely popular seaside resort with thousands holidaying on our coast each summer.
The bid includes details of the resort’s award winning beach and open spaces, identifying them as potential location for sporting events in the run up to the World Cup and also as a Fan Fest site for showing games live and holding other related events. The FA’s whistle-stop tour of the town included a walk along central beach, Tower Esplanade and into Tower Gardens. They were escorted by officials from East Lindsey District Council and Skegness Town Council, who jointly support the bid that is being put forward.
Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said this is another exciting opportunity for the town: “We are keen to support Nottingham City Council in moving their bid forward. We’re working hard to regenerate our coast and provide new and innovative activities for people to enjoy. To be associated with this bid can only be a benefit to our coast.”
Chairman of Skegness Town Council’s Publicity Committee, Councillor George Saxon, who will be one of those meeting the FA’s party, said: “This is a great opportunity for the town and one not to be missed. We have good links with Nottingham and are looking to work more closely with them and other town and cities in the Midlands. This opportunity will benefit the whole of East Coast and not just Skegness.”
