Something for everyone at Lincoln 10k

Published: 25/02/2010

One man has taken part in the race since it began in 1996.  Another will be juggling while he runs, one will be participating following a double lung transplant and one lady will be taking part after losing over five stone in weight during training.

All four will join thousands of men, women and children to pound the streets together at the Lincoln 10K Road Race on Sunday 21st March, organised by the City of Lincoln Council.

Some take part just for the love of running.  Member of the Lincoln and District RunnersCity of Lincoln and Freeman of the City, Mike Smith has completed the race for the past 14 years, since the event began, and he took part in eight Lincoln Half Marathons before that.  I remember one year when my father in law, Bud Robinson, who was the Mayor of Lincoln at the time, started the race on Union Road, said Mike, who has also completed the Great North Run 12 times as well as numerous other races.

One participant adding an element of fun is ‘joggler’, Tim Butler.  In an effort to combine upper and lower body workouts, Tim has been juggling whilst running for the past 18 months and has competed in numerous events.  There’s only one other person in the UK who I know does this, and by lucky coincidence he’s also entered the Lincoln 10K – so there will be two of us joggling! he said.

Personal circumstances often inspire people to take part in the Lincoln 10K.  Rob Longrigg had a double lung transplant in October 2003 after suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. "I decided to enter the Lincoln 10K as I have lived in the city for over two years now and felt it would be a good event to undertake, he said.  Keeping myself physically fit improves my long-term survival and wellbeing and I also enjoy it.  I like to challenge myself with different events each year.  Most importantly for me, it is the ultimate way to pay tribute to my donor, and to honour the gift of life that I have been given, as well as raising awareness of organ donation."

Many people work towards a road race to get fitter and healthier.  Last year, Amanda Straughton from Lincoln decided to lose weight as a good example to her son.  With the Lincoln 10K as one of her motivating goals, Amanda started running last summer and has now lost more than five stone in weight.  "I could not afford to join a gym and I wanted to prove I could achieve excellent results simply through running three times a week and eating a calorie counted diet, said Amanda.  I have recently started a specific 10k training plan and hope to run the race in under 60 minutes. Only a year ago I could not run for longer than one minute and had to walk the majority of a 5km race in 2008 - so it is a huge achievement for me."

Many participants will be raising money for charity.  The official charity of the event is Cerebral Palsy Sport, which seeks to increase sport and physical recreational opportunities for people with a disability, and especially those who have cerebral palsy.
A number of competitors will be helping people with Cerebral Palsy to take part themselves.  Sean Marshall will be helping his daughter, Amber to take part, and Peter Tolley will be escorting his daughter around the course in her wheelchair.

Senior Sports Development Officer at the City of Lincoln Council, Keith Taylor, said: "There really is something for everyone at the Lincoln 10K.  It’s a challenging course set in beautiful surroundings for serious runners, but it’s also accessible for newcomers to running.  By including the school races, the wheelchair race and the new Buggy Push for parents, we’re opening the event to all kinds of participants.

I’d like to wish every competitor the best of luck and hope they succeed in reaching their goals, whether that’s the four minute mile, raising money for charity or just having a great day out.  "

Around 4,000 people have registered to take part in the Lincoln 10K Road Race and a number of last minute places are still available.
