South Kesteven District Council's Cabinet defers Sunday and evening parking charges

South Kesteven District Council's Cabinet will defer its proposals for a £1 parking charge in the evenings and on Sundays after successfully negotiating a one-off VAT refund of just over £750,000.

Part of this will be used to offset the income these extra charges would have generated if they had been introduced.

The Council was considering the introduction of a £1 parking charge for Sundays and evenings after 6pm in all Grantham and Stamford car parks later this year, subject to the results of consultation with regulatory authorities and the public.

The Cabinet has recommended that up to £500,000 of the refund be used to enable South Kesteven District Council
to fund a number of one-off initiatives that will benefit the community. As parking is one of the issues residents and businesses feel strongly about, the Council intends to use some of this money to help keep parking in its car parks completely free after 6pm in the evenings and on Sundays until April 2012, when car parking charges will next be reviewed.

South Kesteven District Council's leader Cllr Linda Neal, said: "I feel strongly that the wider community should benefit from this one-off windfall; however we are undoubtedly facing difficult financial times ahead so a proportion of the refund will be put into the Council's reserves to support future spending plans."

All 12 of South Kesteven District Council's car parks in Stamford and Grantham have been accredited with the 'Park Mark' safe parking award. This means that they have been assessed by the police and have measures in place to help create a safer environment. This scheme is designed to reduce crime and the fear of crime in car parks.

At the Cabinet meeting in early June, councillors will consider how else this windfall might be used to fund other one-off community projects across the district to help deliver key priorities. Recommendations will be put before the Council on 17 June 2010.
