Street Wardens Bring Added Reassurance

Increased reassurance is coming to Skegness and Louth in the form of Street Wardens, who will join Lincolnshire Police officers to boost reassurance amongst festive revellers and assist in reducing seasonal anti-social behaviour, violent crime and drink-related offences over Christmas and New Year.

The Street Wardens will be hitting the beat for the first time on Friday 4 December.  Two Street Wardens for each town have been signed up to work alongside neighbourhood policing teams, providing a highly visible presence on the three weekends leading up to Christmas, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

The additional resources are part of a county-wide Christmas Street Wardens Initiative, funded and coordinated by Lincolnshire County Council.  Eight towns have benefited from the initiative - Louth, Skegness, Boston, Grantham, Stamford, Spalding, Sleaford and Gainsborough.

“Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest times of year for our towns, with hundreds of enjoying works parties and celebrating with friends.  Thankfully, most people are out to enjoy the festive season and not over-indulge, but we hope that the increased high visibility patrols will assist in deterring anyone from drinking excessively and causing problems,” said John Fleming from East Lindsey District Council.

The street wardens will be wearing high visibility ‘Safer Lincolnshire’ clothing and their main role is to bring increased reassurance to the majority of people intent on enjoying the festive season.  The wardens will work alongside police officers, officers from the Special Constabulary and be in regular contact with the towns’ Pubwatch schemes and CCTV operators working from Skegness Police Station.

“The street wardens have been set up to support the police, local authorities and the business sector, such as shops, pubs, clubs and taxi services,” explained Chief Inspector Phil Vickers who heads up local policing across East Division.

“They will undoubtedly play a vital part in ensuring peace is maintained across the festive period and we’re grateful to Lincolnshire County Council and East Lindsey District Council for their support in providing these additional resources for Louth and Skegness,” he said.

Chief Inspector Vickers finished by appealing to local people to assist police this year by drinking responsibly.  He said, “We are asking local people to be sensible when they go out pubbing, clubbing and partying.  Enjoy yourselves and the festive atmosphere but don’t get drunk and out of control.  Stay safe, look after each other and help us to help you.”
