Volunteers are needed in Sutton on Sea to take part in a major flooding exercise next year. Volunteers will be evacuated from their homes during the day on Wednesday 9 March and taken to a rest centre and returned to their homes in the evening.
70 children and staff from Sutton on Sea primary school will also be evacuated, as part of a scenario where sea defences have been breached in the town.
David Powell, Head of Emergency Planning at the county council, said:
“The evacuation will test our East Coast Mass Evacuation and Shelter plan, and will be one of a number of things happening in the county to test our preparedness for flooding during the week of the exercise.”
Funded by Defra and taking place across the country, ’Exercise Watermark’ will test national and local preparations and plans. Lincolnshire’s scenario will be based on a breach in the sea defences at Sutton on Sea. Organisations taking part include councils, the Environment Agency, health services, Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue, and voluntary sector organisations.
David Powell said:
“All these organisations work together to protect and benefit Lincolnshire’s coastline, which is better protected now than at any time. However, everyone needs to know that there is always the possibility of flooding, and climate change will make this more likely. When flooding does happen, we have plans, and it will be these arrangements that will be tested during the exercise.”
Sutton on Sea was chosen as the location for this exercise because of the support from the community in the area who will play an integral part in the exercise.
