Two events are taking place in Marton this summer to celebrate the village's Roman heritage.
The village of Marton, near Gainsborough, sits at the point where an ancient Roman road crosses the River Trent. In Roman times it was a way-point, and even has a mention in the Antonine Itinerary, a Roman register of all the old roads in Britain.
First up this summer is a Roman costume-making workshop on Saturday 17 July, which will be taking place at Marton Village Hall between 10am and 4pm. The workshop is free, and you can either bring your own materials along or purchase on the day. You don’t even have to be an expert in sewing as tuition and support will be provided.
After this workshop you will probably want to show off your new Roman costume, and what better way to do it than the Roman Living History weekend? This is happening on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August at Marton Primary School. There will be a Roman fashion show for children, as well as various demonstrations including, Roman cookery, pottery and mosaic making and wandering soldiers. We will also be looking for volunteers to help excavate a Roman site in the village and to help create a Roman-themed arts project.
