Plans for a £2 million revamp of Boston’s dated and shopper-unfriendly Market Place have been given the green light by traders, businesses and the public.
Following a second round of consultations with all those likely to be affected by the work, proposed designs have received a thumbs-up. Work will now start on the Lincolnshire County Council-led scheme at the beginning of July and are expected to be completed within six to eight months.
Lincolnshire County Council is phasing the works to reduce disruption and meet the needs of businesses and will accommodate access for deliveries wherever possible. Phasing will also enable the Into Town bus to continue running and pedestrian access to be maintained to all shops and services around the Market Place.
During the improvement works, the stall market will move to Wide Bargate and operate as a street market. Meetings will be held with traders to agree the layout.
However, due to safety and other considerations, there will be no parking in the Market Place during construction work and Bank Street will remain closed. Some additional temporary disabled bays will be established at Bargate Green and Custom House Quay car parks. Short-stay tariffs will be introduced to allow customers to visit the banks and post office. There will also be improved signage on the entry routes into the town centre to direct visitors to the many other car parks that are available in town.
