Tourism chiefs in East Lindsey have responded to a research report into coastal tourism produced by a team at Sheffield Hallam University that has been unveiled on Monday.
The report called The Seaside Industry in England and Wales ‘demolishes myths about the demise of the traditional British seaside tourist industry’ and says that coastal tourism and leisure in the UK remain huge areas for economic growth.
Visit Britain statistics show that last year Skegness, which the report identifies as a principal seaside town, was the 5th most visited place in the whole of England and 949,000 people spent at least one night in the resort. This was an increase of 26% on the previous year. London was the most visited.
Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Doreen Stephenson, said: "In Lincolnshire, tourism is worth around £950m to the economy, with a significant amount of this being coastal tourism. The report issued today highlights the importance of why we, as a Council, are already investing in and encouraging investment from the private sector in tourism in East Lindsey. I am determined that, working with our partners, we will extend the holiday season here on the East Coast and improve the offer to ensure we remain at the forefront of the British seaside holiday market for many years to come."
Last week, it was announced that Skegness was the ninth most popular seaside town in the UK, following a survey by consumer magazine, Which?
