Lincolnshire Trading Standards Service is warning people to be vigilant following a number of reports about companies telephoning consumers offering to install burglar alarms for as little as £1.
These companies have been telephoning householders in Lincolnshire, saying that they can install the alarm for £1. They imply that they are approved by a Government scheme or by the local police. Appointments are made to visit consumers in their homes, where high pressure sales techniques are used to convince them to have an alarm fitted, charging between £1,000 and £6,000, depending on what they think the consumer can afford.
Head of Lincolnshire Trading Standards, Peter Heafield, said:
"Companies of this sort are in no way supported by any public organisations and we advise people to be wary of any unsolicited telephone calls offering cheap products or services. Don’t sign up for any anything unless you are entirely happy with the cost and get prices from other businesses if you can. If you have concerns about the legitimacy of any trader or salesperson, call Consumer Direct on 0845 4040506.”
